Savannah, a coastal city in Georgia, is separated from South Carolina by the eponymous river. It is known for its landscaped parks, carriages, and antebellum architecture. Its historic district is full of cobblestone squares and parks like Forsyth Park, shaded by oak trees draped with Spanish moss. At the heart of this picturesque neighborhood stands the famous neo-Gothic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Savannah was President Lincoln’s Christmas gift during the Civil War. General Sherman reduced Atlanta to ashes during his infamous march south. When he reached Savannah, the city’s beauty prompted him to spare it. Instead of destroying Savannah like he had done to Atlanta, Sherman sent a telegram from Savannah, with its manicured squares and lush greenery, to President Lincoln, offering the city as a Christmas gift. And what a gift Savannah remains today!
